90th Birthday Party – Sound of Music Favorite Things

90th Birthday Party – Sound of Music Favorite Things

If you are looking for a unique 90th birthday party idea, you have come to the right place.  Tammy of Meghilys Party in Style, created this wonderful “Favorite Things” party, based on the Sound of Music, for her grandmother.       While her grandmother was actually celebrating a 98th birthday at the time (and looks MUCH younger), this theme could be used for someone of any age.   The only requirement is that you creatively communicate the guest of honor’s favorite things.     Here is a look at the dessert table with treats that look like everybody’s favorite things:

Gift Table: Ask guests to wrap their gifts in brown shipping paper and tie them with brightly colored yarn. This will remind your guest of honor of the lyrics “brown paper packages tied up with string.” They can then place cards on the gift and set all the different sized gifts on one table.

Food: Place large glass dishes or vases on the dessert table along with a cake. These should be various shapes and sizes. Fill each one with some of your birthday guy or gal’s favorite candies, cookies, or even brownies. As Tammy shows, you can make your own lollipops out of cookies or chocolates and place them in a cardboard holder. Place a label on goodie so that guests know what they’re choosing. (You may even wish to provide cellophane bags and twist ties alongside them so that everyone can take home delicious treats.) You’ll want the labels to match the rest of the decorations, as the yellow labels in these pictures do.   A vase with flowers is also a nice touch for your dessert table.   Tammy placed a ribbon around each one with a “98” tag.  Finally, the standing cut-out of “Maria” really dresses up the birthday cake.

Birthday Decorations: Place hand decorated signs in picture frames and set them throughout the room. These can list some of the favorite things your guest of honor has experienced throughout his or her life. You can also list his or birthday alongside inspirational quotes.  I found similar frames at IKEA for .99 each.  They look so elegant with the yellow and white signs.  Finally, place flowers inside glass vases and wrap the vases with ribbon in the color of the rest of the decorations. (The hostess of this party has chosen simple white flowers as a beautiful staple.) Put a sticker on the front of each vase and include either the year of their birth or their age.

Activities:  One of my favorite ideas from this birthday party is the Post it Note board.  Guests were invited to write their favorite things about the guest of honor.

Invitations: Tammy has a custom template for sale on her Etsy site.
