- Determine a size: How many people do you need to feed? Do you want a sheet cake or a layer cake? (If you’re ordering from a bakery, they can recommend a size based on the number of expected guests.) Or, perhaps you’d like to offer a number of options and thus will make a few smaller cakes? Finally, consider making a large round cake and then smaller cupcake versions for guests to take home with them.
- Choose a flavor: There are many cake flavors available, from vanilla to chocolate to mocha. If you have a layered cake, you can also include mousse, frosting, or even fruit in the layers. Also remember that your frosting can be a delicious flavor. Some popular favorites include sour cream or buttercream frosting.
- Decorate your cake: If you’re throwing a themed party, such as ‘Over the Hill’, then you’ll want your cake to serve as a dessert and as a decoration. Thus, you’ll want it to match your theme, so you may want to consider a cake in the shape of a tombstone. (Remember that black icing is often bitter, so you’ll want to taste it before covering the cake.) However, if you don’t have a chosen theme, just make sure your cake matches the colors of the party and includes the name of the birthday celebrant. And, of course, don’t forget the candles!
