My son is a picky eater and regularly requests “ham soup” aka split pea soup. I found a great recipe on About.com Southern Cooking and found it to be so easy, I thought I would share some additional tips with you. All of the ingredients are pictured below.
The great thing about a slow cooker recipe is that you simply throw all of the ingredients in the ceramic unit and press a button. It is important to rinse the split peas, as there is often soap on legumes used when they are cleaned initially. Here is what I would do differently next time. Omit the ham bone and replace it with chicken bullion. You can always add small chunks of ham at the end of the cooking process. I really like “Better than Bullion” chicken. It gives lots of flavor with next to no fat. Finally I suggest using a hand blender at the final step to make the soup creamer and thus more kid-friendly.
